Lucullus 1, Lucius LICINIUS (mid-C2 BC) As consul in 151 he overreached himself by using force to enlist soldiers and officers for his campaign in SpaIII, and with his colleague ALBINUS (2) was imprisoned for a time by the tribunes. In Spain he made an unprovoked attack on the Vaccaei and massacred many of the inhabitants of Cauca, which had surrendered, thus stiffening the opposition of the Spaniards to Rome. The next year he went to the aid of GALBA (4) against the Lusitani and inflicted a severe defeat on them. Galba massacred their leaders who sued for peace. The upshot was the revolt of VIRIATHUS.

2, Lucius LICINIUS (c.118-56 BC), was a grandson of LUCULLUS (1); his maternal uncle was METELLUS (5) Numidicus, whose son METELLUS (7) Pius he supported in pleading for the recall of the former from exile. He was a staunch supporter of SULLA (2) in the Social War which began in 91 BC and gained his entire trust: in 88 when he was quaestor he was the only one of Sulla’s officers to support him in his march on Rome. In 86 Sulla took him to the east on his military staff for his campaign (the First Mithrida-tic War) against MITHRIDATES (3) vi of Pontus and trained him in the manner of fighting there. Sulla entrusted him with the difficult task of collecting ships and cash from the eastern allies, and near Pergamon, according to Sulla’s instructions, he allowed Mithridates to escape the clutches of Gaius FIMBRIA. Lucullus’ naval force later conveyed Sulla across the Hellespont to negotiate from strength with Mithridates at Dardanus. In 79 Lucullus held the aedileship in company with his brother, and put on lavish games for the people. As praetor the following year, Sulla being dead, he acted as guardian to his children and his literary executor. In 77 he was propraetor of Africa, which he ruled effectively, and held the consulship in 74, when he supplied POMPEIUS (2), who was fighting in SpaIII. He intrigued in Rome with CETHE-GUS (3) to enable Marcus ANTONIUS (6) Creticus to obtain an unlimited command against the pirates of the Mediterranean, and himself to have the command against Mithridates as governor of Asia and Bithynia.

The neighbouring kingdom of Bithynia had become Roman territory early in 74 on the death of NIC0MEDES IV: Mithri-dates saw this as a new threat to his independence and anticipated Roman action by occupying Bithynia himself. The resulting Third Mithridatic War involved both Lucullus and his fellow consul of 74, M. AURELIUS COTTA (2): the latter was defeated at sea and besieged in Chalce-don; Mithridates invaded Asia but was unable to take Cyzicus, while Lucullus concentrated his forces, relieved Cyzicus and drove the army of Mithridates in turmoil into Bithynia. He then tried to trap the king there but was failed by the slowness of his naval wing; Mithridates’ fleet escaped but was crippled by a storm in the Black Sea. Lucullus spent the summer of 73 ineffectively trying to
